High School Sports: Track: Athletes qualify for state meets (5/4/21)

Tuesday, May 4, 2021 Six Berryville High School athletes will compete in the Class 4A track and field state championships after qualifying at last week’s 4A-1 district meet. The Bobcats’ 4x800-meter relay team of Caden Nickell, Weston Teague, Jake Lopez and Newt Wiley finished second in the district meet with a time of 9:38.61, while Nickell took third place in the high jump at 5-8 and Tun Oo was third in shot put at 40-11.75. Green Forest hosted the 3A-1 district championships, also on Tuesday, April 27. On the girls’ side, Amelya Deal finished second in the 400-meter dash (1:11.99) and pole vault (5-6). Among boys, Paco Rangel won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 11:28.65 and the Tigers’ 4x800-meter relay team of Paco Rangel, Daniel Schultz, Matthew Vasquez and Alonzo Rangel won that event in 9:13.20. Well, mission accomplished. Berryville scored the first 17 points of the second half to turn a close game into a rout and went on to a 55-34 victory over Ozark on Thursday, March 4, in the first round of the 4A North regional tournament at the Hillbilly Activity Center. The win clinched a state tournament bid for the Bobcats, who went on to finish fourth in the regional. Berryville will face Southside Batesville at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, in Morrilton.
