LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces and area first responders helped celebrate the 100th birthday of Col. Fred Yanker (Ret.) with a celebratory parade on Thursday, March 11. American Legion Post 10 Joe Quesenberry offered to organize a caravan for Yanker’s 100th birthday and local law enforcement turned out in spades. Fire department personnel drove by Yanker’s home off of Carver Road Thursday with sirens blaring on the fire trucks. Local police and the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department also joined in the line of vehicles, which stretched down the full length of the road. The Yanker family and friends were set up in front of their home to greet the celebrants. And American Legion Post leaders held flags to recognize Yanker’s service to his country. ....

He was born in 1921, that’s some incredible math! Fred is a 30 year Army veteran, enlisting in the US Army at the beginning of WW2. He served in many roles and rose quickly in the ranks. At the end of the war he was transferred to White Sands Proving Grounds, now called White Sands Missile Range, WSMR. Throughout his career there he held multiple roles involving security, rocket launches and equipment design. ....
James Thomas Pirtle, 90, Olathe, Kansas, passed away from Alzheimerâs disease on January 2, 2021. Inurnment will be in Faith Mausoleum II, Mt. Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Road. Condolences can be made at www.mtmoriah.net. Jim was born March 25, 1930, in Canadian, Texas, to James Burgher Pirtle and Vida Aileen (Lively) Pirtle. He had three younger brothers: Robert L. Pirtle, David L. Pirtle (deceased), and Patrick A. Pirtle. He was married for 64 years to Frances (Blanton) Pirtle, who predeceased him. ....
I sat down to write a story about the First Congregational Church but my thoughts kept drifting to my father who died one year ago on December 1, 2019. So I decided to write down one of the stories he told me about his time in the Army during World War II. Dad was born in Herington, Kansas to Milton and Maudie Debus Wade. He was the youngest of six children and Grandma Wade expected him to take care of her and remain unmarried, so he did not enlist. After graduating high school in 1942, he went to work for the Rock Island Railroad as a telegrapher. Grandpa Wade worked as a mechanic on the steam engines in the Roundhouse. ....
