Former Chicago Bears draft picks gained fame in other areas, including Don Meredith and Jim Fassel

Tom Harmon (1941, first round) After winning the Heisman Trophy in 1940 while playing halfback for Michigan, Harmon was selected by the Bears with the first overall pick in the 1941 draft. But he opted to play for the New York Americans in the rival All-American Football Conference. Harmon enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He eventually played in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams in 1946-47 before becoming a sports broadcaster. Harmon, who passed away March 15, 1990 at the age of 70, is the father of actor and former UCLA quarterback Mark Harmon.

Arkansas-Arkansas State will finally play: 'It's time' – The Athletic

34 Any political campaign deals with a slew of attacks, both serious and silly. And during the 2006 Arkansas gubernatorial race, Mike Beebe found himself in the midst of a brewing scandal that straddled the line. Message board rumors suggested that Beebe, then the Arkansas attorney general and the presumptive Democratic nominee, would push to mandate an annual football game between the state’s two FBS programs: Arkansas and Arkansas State. Beebe holds degrees from both schools and did want to see them play, although he always maintained it shouldn’t happen via government decree. This rumor became a big problem when it reached the desk of legendary Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles, who spent decades upholding sometimes against fierce opposition the longstanding rule that the Razorbacks do not schedule in-state competition in any sport.

Arkansas vs Arkansas State is the right move again by Hunter Yurachek

Arkansas vs Arkansas State is the right move again by Hunter Yurachek Share this story Our long Cold War is officially over. Arkansas vs Arkansas State is finally happening. As you heard yesterday, the two sides have formally agreed to play each other for the first time in history at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock in 2025. Under athletic director Hunter Yurachek, the Razorbacks began dipping their toes in the local pool by playing institutional affiliates UAPB and UALR in baseball, and it has only continued to gain momentum since then. The long-standing mandate that “thou shalt not play in-state schools” going back to the Barnhill and Frank Broyles era has now been lifted as the Hogs have continued to look for more nearby opportunities.
