The candidates for the County Legislatureâs special election to fill the open seat in district two faced off in a virtual debate on March 11, hosted by the League of Women Voters. Leslie Schill and Veronica Pillar each got the chance to tell voters a bit more about their platforms, as well as answer questions about affordable housing, tax rates, public transportation and reimagining public safety.
Schill explained that her platform is focused on public health, and that her first priority will be supporting the countyâs department of health through the rest of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pillar is an activist and grassroots organizer who said sheâs running to be the bridge between the community and local government.

In November of last year, Dr. Anna Kelles was elected to the NY State Assembly after overwhelming support in Tompkins County. She then resigned from her position as a Tompkins County District 2 legislator at the end of December. The Legislature recently scheduled a special election on March 23 to fill her vacancy.
Despite several of Kellesâ colleagues having run for higher positions before, Kelles is the first active legislator to win.Â
âWe are certainly proud of her for that,â said Chairwoman Leslyn McBean-Clairborne.Â
However, a precedent for how to go about filling a vacant seat in the Legislature was set long ago.Â
