As a new hurricane season officially starts Tuesday, June 1, we can only hope it isn’t as active as 2020 s.
In 2020, there were a record-breaking 30 named storms, 13 of which strengthened to hurricane status, while six of them became major hurricanes.
The 2020 hurricane season wasted no time becoming extremely active. Setting a record for the fastest start to a season ever, nine named storms formed between May and July. With the formation of Tropical Storm Wilfred on September 18, the 21-name Atlantic list was completely used up for only the second time. There would also be nine more Greek-named storms that formed by November 30.

The Atlantic hurricane season doesn t start until June 1, but meteorologists on Friday afternoon were tracking a well-defined low pressure system over the western Gulf of Mexico with winds of 30-35 mph near and east of the center, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The tropical disturbance stood a 60% chance of becoming a cyclone in the next 48 hours, but forecasters warned Friday that regardless of development, the system could produce heavy rainfall over portions of southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana through Saturday. Citing recent downpours in that area in the past week, the hurricane center also warned that any additional heavy rain could lead to flash flooding there.
The storms that gain hurricane strength have actually been growing stronger. Author: Adriana Navarro (AccuWeather) Updated: 3:51 PM CST January 14, 2021
An analysis by AccuWeather meteorologists and scientists shows that while the overall intensity of hurricane seasons appears to be trending downward, the storms that gain hurricane strength have actually been growing stronger.
The simple answer to what is driving this trend lies in the fact that there is more warm water and warm, moist air in the atmosphere that serve as fuel to help maintain the intensity and strength of the storms. However, the longer answer involves a deeper dive into the data and a look at weather mechanics.
