L A City Council Committee Approves Mike Bonin Proposal to Study Homeless Shelters at Beaches

L.A. City Council Committee Approves Mike Bonin Proposal to Study Homeless Shelters at Beaches 13 May 2021 The Los Angeles City Council’s Homeless and Poverty Committee voted 4-1 Thursday to authorize a study for a controversial proposal by Councilmember Mike Bonin to build temporary shelters for the homeless at local beaches, among other sites. As Breitbart News reported last month: Los Angeles City Council member Mike Bonin has proposed sheltering the city’s growing homeless populations in facilities at local beaches on the Pacific Ocean, provoking the ire of local residents who rely on the beaches for recreation. Touting what he calls an “everything in” approach to homelessness, Bonin posted his plan last week, which includes a motion to study a “temporary site for single-occupancy tiny homes or safe camping at the county-owned parking lot at Will Rogers State Beach” in Pacific Palisades; similar sites at Dockweiler Beach in Playa Del Rey and Fisheran’s Village

Councilman Bonin explains his approach to homelessness Mar. 06, 2021 at 6:00 am Homelessness is rising all around Los Angeles, especially in Venice where the growing population has correlated with an increase in crime, fires, and trash pollution and resulted in widespread community frustration over a perceived lack of government accountability. The Daily Press interviewed CD-11 Councilman Mike Bonin about his approach to homelessness and why Los Angeles’ current response systems are failing. Why does Venice have a huge unhoused population compared to the rest of your district? Homelessness is increasing everywhere and has increased at greater rates in the areas where homelessness has historically been present. There is this desire to tell unhoused people where to go, but until you have provided a place for people to go, unhoused people get to determine where they go.

Safe Place for Youth Executive Director steps down after 10 years of service Jan. 28, 2021 at 6:00 am Alison Hurst founded Safe Place for Youth as the Westside’s first dedicated service provider for homeless youth and, after 10 years of exceptional growth, has decided it is time to move on. When Hurst began her work SPY was nothing more than a group of volunteers handing out bags of food and clothes to homeless youth in Venice Beach. A decade later it has expanded into an organization with over 80 employees providing housing, case management, street outreach, health and wellness support, and education and employment programs to over 1,500 youths a year.
