Local students are being recognized by the Woodstock Art Gallery for their artistic talent through the announcement of its annual scholarship and the winners of its youth art show.
Cassandra Birtch, a graduating Woodstock Collegiate Institute student, is the recipient of this year’s Friends of The Woodstock Art Gallery legacy scholarship. Birtch received $1,000 – presented Wednesday during a virtual celebration – towards her post-secondary education at Humber College working on a bachelor of engineering.

“Thank you to the Woodstock Art Gallery and the scholarship jury. I am honoured to be supported in my future creative endeavours,” said Birtch.

Twelve students from local high schools will receive Rotary medals this year, the area’s Rotary clubs announced.
Each spring, the Rotary clubs of Oxford County present Rotary medals to 12 “outstanding” students. Two students were selected from each of Woodstock Collegiate Institute, College Avenue secondary school, St Mary’s Catholic high school, Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute, Glendale high school and Huron Park secondary school.

The weekend brought a glimmer of good news for COVID-19 case counts in the Oxford and Elgin counties region.
Despite 57 new cases, the active case count in the region dropped to 190 after nearing 200 on Friday.

The region recorded 57 new cases over the weekend but, with 65 people considered recovered over the same period, the active total dropped by eight, Southwestern public health reported.
There have now been 3,197 cases and 72 deaths in the region from COVID-19 to date, including three deaths reported last week alone.
