Keep veterans PTSD in mind on Independence Day

Ahead of this holiday weekend, KATC wants to share two veteransâ perspectives on an iconic part of the Fourth of July: fireworks.
According to Veteran Affairs, Louisiana is home to more than 250,000 veterans.
While fireworks might not impact every veteran the same way, veteran Deron Santiny says itâs important to keep in mind that the holiday is coming up.
âI expect it so Iâm aware of it,â said Santiny, who is co-chair of the Veterans Action Coalition in Southwest Louisiana. âBut some veterans, depending on their level of PTSD and how they learn to cope with it, they are skittish, or it just brings back bad memories.â

When Moncus Park opens later this year, it will feature a memorial to Acadiana veterans.
âItâs really important to Lafayette, because we have so many veterans here who deserve that,â said Ronald Crowley with the Veterans Action Coalition of Southwest Louisiana.
Tuesday, a groundbreaking was held featuring major donors and stakeholders with the park, but also members of the coalition, who raised more than $1 million for the memorial.
âItâs going to be beautiful, but we also want it to be educational,â said Dr. Jon âSkipâ Palmintier with the coalition. âWe felt there are a lot of young people who don t know history.â
