Bay Area Reporter :: CA lawmakers seek audit of state's LGBTQ data collection efforts

A number of California lawmakers Tuesday officially asked for an audit to be conducted of the state s efforts to collect LGBTQ demographic health data. The request had been expected as the COVID pandemic has brought to the forefront myriad issues in gathering sexual orientation and gender identity information.
As the Bay Area Reporter first reported in December, gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) had decided to seek a legislative audit via the Joint Legislative Audit Committee in order to examine how the state health department is meeting a legal requirement to collect the SOGI data. Since 2018, a number of California departments and agencies focused on health care and social services were to be collecting SOGI data after lawmakers enacted several pieces of legislation requiring that they do so. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: California not tracking COVID vaccinations in LGBTQ residents

As COVID vaccinations ramp up with a third vaccine authorized for use, community leaders and health officials across California are pushing to see that LGBTQ individuals sign up to get inoculated. Yet there will be no way to know just how many LGBTQ people get a shot.
The state s public health department is not tracking vaccinations among LGBTQ Californians, the Bay Area Reporter has learned. The lack of gathering sexual orientation and gender identity data related to the vaccines comes as California health officials remain blind to just how widespread COVID-19 has been within the Golden State s LGBTQ population.
We just confirmed the state is collecting no SOGI data on vaccines, gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) told the B.A.R. March 2. I think this points to a broader issue, and I want to be really frank that we don t see health care providers and counties and the state constantly quibbling and making excuses around race and age and gender data. They ju ....

Bay Area Reporter :: Health panel pledges to address missing LGBTQ COVID data

A national panel is pledging to work with California officials on addressing the lack of data about how COVID-19 is impacting the LGBTQ community.
The Public Health Work Group oversees what are known as Health Level Seven International (HL7) standards that provide guidance on the collection of certain patient characteristics, such as racial and ethnic data. But they do not include sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data, which has hampered efforts in California and other states to collect health information about LGBTQ people in order to better address what is ailing them.
The issue has taken on greater import over the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as the lack of SOGI data on people testing positive for the novel coronavirus has made it impossible to know how widespread infections have been in the LGBTQ community or how many LGBTQ Americans have been killed by the virus. Many LGBTQ people have underlying health issues that make them more susceptible ....
