WSU Researcher to Discuss Housing Discrimination in Ogden

May 19, 2021 OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University adjunct economic faculty member Jennifer Gnagey will present findings from her ongoing research into the history of housing discrimination in Ogden and Weber County on Thursday, May 20, at Ogden’s Union Station.  “Tracing the Legacy of Housing Discrimination in Ogden” is an in-person event that begins at 6:30 p.m. To get a Zoom link, register for the presentation on Union Station’s Facebook event page. Gnagey, who teaches in the John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics, will discuss discriminatory housing practices such as redlining and racial covenants and how they were used to shape neighborhoods in Ogden.

She decided to put that suspicion to the test and asked a white family friend to stand in for her during an appraisal. Her home’s value suddenly shot up. A lot. During the early months of the coronavirus pandemic last year, the first two appraisers who visited her home in the historic Flanner House Homes neighborhood, just west of downtown Indianapolis, valued it at $125,000 and $110,000, respectively. But that third appraisal went differently.
