NDP seniors critic Lori Sigurdson has tabled a new private member’s bill that, if passed, would establish an independent Alberta seniors’ advocate.
Similar to what already exists in British Columbia, Bill 215, the Seniors’ Advocate Act, tabled Thursday, would create an office independent from government that would help seniors navigate services, provide policy recommendations and be able to conduct non-binding reviews if systemic issues or issues in the public interest arise.

Seniors have been disproportionally impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In Alberta, more than 1,200 seniors in continuing care or supportive living sites have died of the virus. In British Columbia, the independent advocate there has investigated large outbreaks and studied the impact of restrictions on seniors.

It’s an upgrade that was long overdue.
On Wednesday, Feb. 10, Heartland Housing Foundation celebrated the grand opening of the new Clover Bar Lodge located at 1040 Iris Evans Way.

Replacing the original aging facility, the new building increases capacity from 79 to 144 one-bedroom units. Accessibility has been improved inside the new lodge with the footprint of each resident room increased from about 250 square feet to 350 square feet. It also includes more modern technological and recreational amenities. Rent is geared to income at 30 per cent, plus the lodge services package at $850. It accommodates senior residents from Strathcona County and the surrounding area.
