IDEM Commissioner Comments on “Pretty Tough” 2021 Legislative Session
IDEM Commissioner Bruno Pigott addressed Environmental Rules Board about several bills passed by the Indiana Legislature affecting the agency directly.

The head of the state’s environmental agency said the 2021 Indiana Legislative session was “pretty tough” for the agency.
In the first meeting of the Environmental Rules Board since the end of the regular annual legislative session, Indiana Department of Environmental Management Commissioner Bruno Pigott said the agency was “not pleased” with some of the legislation that was approved by lawmakers.
“We’ve just emerged from what I think our agency would call a pretty tough legislative session,” Pigott told the board. ....

Indiana s General Assembly recently illustrated what s become an unfortunate and all-too-frequent political maxim: When money talks, good public policy walks.
In this case the money, about $390,000 spread across the General Assembly since 2017, according to the Indianapolis Star, comes from the Indiana Builders Association. The result is Senate Bill 389, and it is bad public policy. I hope Gov. Eric Holcomb will veto the bill.
Its first, horrible iteration was a repeal of regulations that protect about 800,000 acres of wetlands not connected to a lake or a stream. These wetlands perform basic and important functions. ....
