After 38 years of serving the community, a surprise was in store for Freedom House Founder Nedda Simon. The emergency shelter serving women in crisis unveiled the new conference center next door, named after Nedda and her husband Don for their service to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The fact that Don is also honored, that s what really touched my heart, Nedda says.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity announced the recipients for the 2020 Community Development Block Grants for Public Infrastructure. A total of $18.2 million will be awarded statewide for water and sewer system improvements. The Village of Buda, Ladd, Marseilles, Ottawa, Toluca, Wenona and Wyanet each will receive at least $550,000.
Marseilles will be addressing issues with the overflow of Gum Creek.
“With the assistance of this grant, we will now be able to address important issues that will assist in strengthening the infrastructure that is critical to achieving economic recovery, while providing residents with piece of mind and restoring confidence in the place they call home.” said Mayor James Hollenbeck.

The Founding Fathers distrusted political parties. Nevertheless, political divisions arose and political parties soon developed. First there were Federalists (strong central government) versus Jeffersonian Republicans (limited government). Then the former dissolved and the latter became Democratic-Republicans but evolved into the Democratic Party of Andrew Jackson, essentially today’s Democrats. Jackson’s opponents soon formed the Whig Party.
In the 1850s, slavery and its expansion into new territories and states led to the formation of a new party comprised of Whigs, disgruntled northern Democrats, and others.
