Police target anti-social behaviour in Airlie party precinct

Premium Content Subscriber only Whitsunday Police officer in charge sergeant Nathan Blain said police had arrested and charged five people in the past week for committing public nuisance in the Safe Night Precinct, and would continue to take a “high vigilance” approach to such behaviour in a bid to “curb assault rates”. The five arrests Sgt Blain referred to were in addition to the following five men who appeared Proserpine Magistrates Court on public nuisance charges. Euan Wright pleaded guilty in the Proserpine court on Monday, to committing public nuisance near a licensed premises and failing to leave a licensed premises, following an incident at Mama Africa nightclub.

Ute evades police patrolling for car thieves

Premium Content Subscriber only Whitsunday Police are on the hunt for the driver of a green ute seen acting suspiciously in the Cannon Valley area in the early hours of April 16. Police conducting patrols in relation to a recent spate of property thefts spotted the green Holden Commodore ute travelling on Gregory Cannon Valley Road near the Shute Harbour Road intersection about 2.30am. The vehicle, its alleged, failed to stop at a police intercept and continued to evade police. An investigation is ongoing. mackay crime

Cannonvale man charged for kicking cop between legs

Premium Content Subscriber only A Cannonvale man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer during a night out in Airlie Beach. Whitsunday Police said the 36-year-old man caught their attention with “abusive, aggressive” behaviour on April 19. He allegedly “lashed out” at police during his arrest, kicking one officer in the testicles. As a result, he has been charged with serious assault on a police officer, obstructing police, contravening a police direction, and public nuisance. He has been banned from the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct for three months. He will appear before the Proserpine Magistrates Court at a later date.

Whitsunday man accused of dramatic chain of offences

Premium Content Subscriber only A Cannonvale man has been charged after he allegedly grabbed a fire twirler from a performer and then punched a cyclist multiple times. Police allege the man was refused entry to a licensed venue on Shute Harbour Rd in Airlie Beach about 12.15am on Saturday. The 25-year-old man then approached a nearby crowd watching a street performer who was using fire sticks. Police allege the man rushed towards the fire twirler and took a fire stick before running down the street with it towards a taxi rank. He then allegedly threw the stick over his shoulder into the air.
