UMATILLA COUNTY â When we look back on 2020 the story that will jump out will be the COVID-19 pandemic and the way it disrupted our everyday lives â even in Umatilla and Morrow counties.
From the day (March 2), the state announced that a man had tested positive for the coronavirus after attending a basketball game at the Weston Middle School gym, nothing was the same. COVID-19 closed schools and businesses, forced the cancelation of a number of events, including the iconic Pendleton Round-Up, the first time the event wasnât held as scheduled since World War II. After reviewing the top COVID-19-related stories, we compiled a list and then pared it down to the top 10 pandemic stories.
PENDLETON â The Pendleton Round-Upâs Tough Enough To Wear Pink may not have been able to take place in 2020, but that didnât prevent the campaign from raising $11,000 for its causes. The TETWP campaign on Dec. 29, 2020, donated more than $11,000 to two local cancer support organizations.
The Round-Up Associationâs TETWP split $11,000 raised in 2020 between the St. Anthony Hospital Cancer Care Clinic and the Kickinâ Cancer New Beginnings program. While contributions usually come from generous sponsors, donations, fundraising events and merchandise sales, not having the 2020 Pendleton Round-Up meant no TETWP event. Instead, this yearâs contributions came from two primary sources: the Letâer Buck Cares Fund and Oregon Grain Growers Brand Distillery (OGGB).
