The Connecticut General Assembly is considering legislation – Senate Bill 952 – to ensure deployment of 1,000 megawatts of energy storage capacity by the end of 2030 – enough to power about 1 million homes.
To capture the benefits of energy storage and ensure Connecticut stays on track to meet its 2040 clean energy goals, we believe the pending bill should be modified to accelerate the deployment deadline and require all storage resources be competitively sourced.

Adding a significant amount of battery energy storage to the power grid can provide significant cost, reliability, and environmental benefits to the people of Connecticut. Stand-alone energy storage facilities provide new capacity to the grid and complement renewable energy resources by absorbing their ex

While the average output (in megawatts) and capacity (in megawatt-hours) of grid-connected battery storage systems appear to be getting larger, with some recently completed and announced projects exceeding the hundred MW / MWh mark, there’s still a vital role to be played for smaller systems that showcase the multiple different configurations and applications for lithium-ion batteries.
Here are three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects from the US that may not individually make headlines for their relative size, but nonetheless prove the value and flexibility of batteries for the grid.

Texas’ grid and the idiosyncrasies of its electricity planning system regime made global headlines in February following a harsh winter storm and subsequent blackouts that affected millions of people and businesses for almost an entire week.
The tragic events, which left an estimated 30 people dead, were followed quickly by initial, predictable, depressing knee-jerk reactionary blaming of renewable energy by politicians and media outlets alike. In reality wind and solar both performed above grid planners expectations in the state while thermal generation sources not only underperformed, but still despite a wave of propaganda comprise the vast majority of the generation mix in the Lone Star State.
