20 UW researchers elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences for 2021

A spring day on the University of Washington campus.Dennis Wise Twenty scientists and engineers at the University of Washington are among the 38 new members elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences for 2021, according to a July 15 announcement. New members were chosen for “their outstanding record of scientific and technical achievement, and their willingness to work on behalf of the Academy to bring the best available science to bear on issues within the state of Washington.” Current academy members selected 29 of the new members. An additional nine were elected by virtue of joining one of the National Academies. New UW members who were elected by current academy members are:

Life on Venus Claim Faces Strongest Challenge Yet

Scientific American New studies knock down a controversial report observing phosphine in the planet’s atmosphere Print The swirling clouds of Venus, as seen by NASA’s Mariner 10 mission in 1974. Credit: NASA and JPL-Caltech Advertisement Two papers have dealt a fresh blow to the idea that Venus’s atmosphere might contain phosphine gas a potential sign of life. The claim that there is phosphine on Venus rocked planetary science last September, when researchers reported spotting the gas’s spectral signature in telescope data. If confirmed, the discovery could mean that organisms drifting among Venusian clouds are releasing the gas. Since then, several studies have challenged although not entirely debunked the report.

Phosphine on Venus is probably just sulfur dioxide

Purported phosphine on Venus is more likely to be ordinary sulfur dioxide, a new study shows. In September, a team led by astronomers in the United Kingdom announced that they had detected the chemical phosphine in the thick clouds of Venus. The team’s reported detection, based on observations from two Earth-based radio telescopes, surprised many Venus experts. Earth’s atmosphere contains small amounts of phosphine, which may be produced by life. Phosphine on Venus generated buzz that the planet, often succinctly touted as a “hellscape,” could somehow harbor life within its acidic clouds.
