The women depicted in opera rarely escape unscathed. Often they die or are assaulted. Perhaps they’re forced to watch – or cause – the death of a loved one. Even more rarely are they given more than one dimension to the character. They love the male lead. They hate the villain. They want to protect their child. They are simple.

Lorelei challenges what has come before. First staged in 2018, it takes the singular mythical character of Lorelei – a beautiful siren who lures sailors to their deaths with her song – and splits her into three distinct women.
