“We saw that we had a systemic issue around medications and thought if we could solve that problem, keep people healthy, we may be able to forego them needing emergency assistance down the road. That helped us launch a plan for the pharmacy in the spring of 2018,” he said. “The pharmacy department came out in our efforts around our main mission which is emergency help for those in need. We do visits where we go out to people’s homes and learn more about what they need and who we can best serve them.”
The road to getting the pharmacy up and running hasn’t been easy, with legislation changes necessary to make it a reality.

Spring has sprung and we are still taking time to look at some of our New Roots farmers. New Roots is a national community garden program in which the IRC helps people to reconnect to their farming past and create fruitful tomorrows. The Dallas IRC manages four gardens throughout the city with a total of 37 gardeners. Participants grow food both for their families and to sell at a farm stand.
In the fall growing season, our longtime partner, Northridge Presbyterian Church sponsored refugee farmers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to offset the income they are losing from not selling at the closed markets. The produce that was not being sold was donated by our farmers and distributed into the community of Vickery Meadows by the New Roots Food Security program.

Literacy Achieves, a nonprofit that mainly focuses on adult literacy initiatives, began hosting food and water distribution events after their neighborhood was severely impacted by the February snowstorm in Dallas.
Some residents of Dallas Vickery Meadow neighborhood still did not have running water. A City of Dallas attorney says property owners could face legal action if repairs aren t made or alternatives for residents aren t provided.
When the power went out and temperatures dipped below freezing, Dallas resident Ana Lopez sought shelter at a friend’s place.
The Mexico native has lived in the ethnically diverse neighborhood known as Vickery Meadow for more than a decade. Many residents are either refugees or immigrants. Most live in apartments.

Some people hardest hit by the winter storm live in the Vickery Meadows neighborhood in northeast Dallas. Literacy Achieves, a learning center in the community, has helped dozens of families with food, water and even a warm place to stay. Director Ashley Holm talked to Good Day about the recovery efforts.
DALLAS - People in the low-income community of Vickery Meadows in northeast Dallas will receive much-needed food, water and supplies Friday morning.
Some of the people living in the area have been without water since last week’s winter storm.
