How to prepare to travel to Hawaii, in 7 steps

How to prepare to travel to Hawaii, in 6 steps Natalie Compton Reporter Natalie Compton traveled to Maui to experience Hawaii s strict entry process for herself. Since Hawaii reopened to travelers last year, the state has been one of the most popular travel destinations for Americans despite its strict entry requirements. Those requirements have evolved throughout the pandemic. The most recent iteration of its policy came in October with the launch of the Safe Travels Hawaii program, which allowed visitors with a negative coronavirus test result obtained within 72 hours of departure bypass a 10-day quarantine. There has been speculation that the pretesting requirement may be lifted for fully vaccinated travelers, but at this time, a vaccination eases only inter-island travel for Hawaiian residents. U.S. largely weathered Christmas coronavirus surge, but experts warn the threat could intensify

U.S. largely weathered Christmas coronavirus surge, but experts warn the threat could intensify Fenit Nirappil Ambulances outside Emanate Health Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, Calif., on Jan. 12. (Philip Cheung for The Washington Post) The United States appears to have avoided the worst-case coronavirus scenarios that officials feared would overwhelm hospitals in the aftermath of Christmas and New Year’s gatherings. But experts caution that the threat from the virus has not diminished and could intensify with the emergence of new variants. Even as hospitalizations begin to stabilize, they do so from record heights. The country’s hospitals averaged more than 130,000 covid-19 patients a day over seven days this month, far exceeding summer and spring surges. The death toll from cases contracted before and after the holidays will stretch into February. Authorities reported nearly 4,500 deaths Wednesday, a new single-day record.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny detained on his arrival in Moscow five months after near-fatal poisoning Isabelle Khurshudyan, Loveday Morris Replay Video UP NEXT MOSCOW Russian authorities detained Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny on his return to Moscow on Sunday, five months after a near-fatal poisoning in Siberia. The opposition leader was taken into custody shortly after his flight landed at Moscow s Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport, Russia s prison service said. Before his arrival, Russian authorities said he was on a wanted list for allegedly violating the terms of his suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction. Navalny and the European Court of Human Rights have called that case a political prosecution.
