Premium Content Subscriber only Another season of a continued lifesaver shortage in Mackay has caused ongoing safety concern as lagoons and beaches are constantly understaffed. Surf Life Saving Australia has launched a campaign to recruit and train qualified staff in the region, with the lack of personnel slowing down the industry’s post-pandemic rebuild. Surf Life Saving Queensland co-ordinator Russell Blanchard said the lack of staff had been an issue for several years. “Particularly in Mackay we’ve struggled to find staff for the last few years,” he said. “The pandemic impacted everywhere regionally, we have a lot of casual staff who were put out of work.”
