Another season of a continued lifesaver shortage in Mackay has caused ongoing safety concern as lagoons and beaches are constantly understaffed.
Surf Life Saving Australia has launched a campaign to recruit and train qualified staff in the region, with the lack of personnel slowing down the industry’s post-pandemic rebuild.
Surf Life Saving Queensland co-ordinator Russell Blanchard said the lack of staff had been an issue for several years.
“Particularly in Mackay we’ve struggled to find staff for the last few years,” he said.
“The pandemic impacted everywhere regionally, we have a lot of casual staff who were put out of work.”

Surfing
The revival of surfing, which took place at the beginning of the 20th century, coincided with the revival of swimming.
Although swimming can be traced back to antiquity and numbers Caesar and Charlemagne among its more famous exponents, the sport had fallen into disrepute during the Middle Ages, as it was thought to be the cause of smallpox epidemics.
When taken up again in the last century, swimming out of doors had transgressed Victorian ideas of morality, and there were many complaints about mixed bathing and the flagrant exposure of naked flesh on the beaches (such as fingers, toes, and necks!)

Subscriber only Top surf life savers competing at the Australian surf life saving championships on the Sunshine Coast are now in lockdown after a COVID-19 scare in Western Australia. It is understood around 15 athletes from Western Australia were due to contest finals on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday on the final day of the nine-day championships. There were also a number of athletes and officals who had not made finals affected.
