ST. PAUL Walter Frederick Fritz Mondale, who served as vice president under then-President Jimmy Carter before waging his own unsuccessful White House bid in 1984, has died, according to a family spokesperson. He was 93.
Mondale died at home in downtown Minneapolis surrounded by family, spokesperson Kathy Tunheim said. It is with profound sadness that we share news that our beloved dad passed away today in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mondale s family said in a statement. As proud as we were of him leading the presidential ticket for Democrats in 1984, we know that our father s public policy legacy is so much more than that.

Today, our Nation mourns the loss of one of our Nationâs most dedicated patriots and public servants. Walter Frederick âFritzâ Mondale served the people of Minnesota as their Attorney General from 1960-1964, as a United States Senator from 1964-1976, as Vice President of the United States from 1977-1981, and as the United States Ambassador to Japan from 1993-1996.
As Minnesotaâs Attorney General, he drew national attention in a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court that established that indigent criminal defendants have the right to legal counsel.
As a Senator, he was instrumental in the passage of The Fair Housing Act to combat racial discrimination in housing, Title IX to provide more opportunities for women, and numerous laws to protect our environment.

Mondale announced during his acceptance speech at the 1984 Democratic nominating convention that he would raise taxes in order to reduce the budget deficit. “Let’s tell the truth…Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won’t tell you, I just did.”
Colorado Sen. Gary Hart defeated Mondale in the New Hampshire primary in 1984 and had initial success positioning himself as the candidate of new ideas, until Mondale remarked, “When I hear your new ideas, I’m reminded of the [Wendy’s] ad, ‘Where’s the beef? ”
