Agencies are stepping up efforts to recruit foster parents for highly traumatized kids
Mental health professionals especially being sought

DENVER â There are nearly half a million children in foster care across the United States, many of whom have experienced some level of trauma. Social workers are focused on recruiting families to take on the highest-level cases to give those children some stability.

Rest Haven Children’s Health Fund, a foundation supporting health-related services for underserved children in San Diego and Imperial counties, recently awarded grants totaling $172,122 to 16 area nonprofits.
Six of the nonprofits selected this year were first-time recipients: Aseltine School, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito, Montgomery Middle School (Sweetwater Union High School District), San Diego Rescue Mission, The Elizabeth Hospice and YWCA of San Diego County.
The others are Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside, Imperial Valley Food Bank, Neighborhood House Association, North County Health Services, North County Lifeline, Palomar Family Counseling Services Inc., Promises2Kids, San Diego Center for Children, Sharp HealthCare Foundation, and the UC San Diego Student Run Free Dental Health Clinic.
