THE state government has confirmed it still plans to allow camping on waterfronts licensed to farmers for grazing, but said details were still being finalised, and an announcement on how they will be enforced was imminent.
The confirmation follows an article recently published in the
Weekly Times, which reported “two industry stakeholder groups” told the newspaper the government had opted to open up “25 pilot sites” instead.

THE state opposition is celebrating after media reports leaked the state government has backed down on its proposed legislation to allow camping on licenced river frontages.
Last Friday, the
Weekly Times published an article asserting the government had dropped its election commitment to allow camping and campfires on 17,000 kilometres of river frontages licensed to farmers from September this year, prompting proponents of the legislation to ask for clarification.
The article cited “two industry stakeholder groups”, which told the newspaper the government had opted to open up “25 pilot sites” instead.
The laws would allow campers to light fires and camp for 28 days straight within 200 metres from farmers’ homes, collect half a cubic metre of firewood per day (despite farmers not being able to collect firewood themselves on the same land) and in some instances, void farmers’ insurance policies given the risk of biosecurity hazard
Farmers to be impacted by proposed new labour hire laws

The Weekly Times has reported that Victoria’s peak farming body has raised concerns over new proposed laws before State Parliament that would give labour hire workers greater rights and protections.
The Victorian Government introduced the Occupational Health and Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2021 to Parliament late last month, with the aim of extending the definition of “employer” and “employee” to ensure labour hire workers are considered employees of their host employer, such as a farmer.
A statement explained that under current laws, the host employer does not owe labour hire workers the same health and safety duties as they do their own staff.
