Milwaukee School Board election: Your guide to informed vote April 6

About half of Milwaukee voters will elect new school board members April 6, with no incumbents running for four open seats. Two of the races have only one candidate on the ballot: Walker’s Point Center for the Arts executive director Marcela Garcia for the south side District 6 seat now held by Tony Baez; and recently retired Milwaukee Public Schools teacher Harry Leonard for the southwest District 7 seat held by Paula Phillips.  The north side District 4 seat is contested between Silver Spring Neighborhood Center Opportunity Youth Program Director Aisha Carr and North Side Rising organizer Dana Kelley.  Running for District 5 on the east side are Alex Brower, director of Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans; and Jilly Gokalgandhi, Equity in Education team member at American Family Insurance Institute.

Statement on Evan Goyke Endorsement

Milwaukee – Evan Goyke, State Representative WI-18, proudly endorsed Aisha Carr for Milwaukee Public School Board District 4. Evan Goyke explained that he appreciates her experience and accessibility, which he notes are important qualities in a leader. Regarding his endorsement, Goyke stated, “I am supporting Aisha Carr for Milwaukee School Board because of her passion and commitment to young people. Aisha ran for the same position four years ago and I did not support her. While we do not agree on every issue, Aisha has been open, accessible, and has listened to my concerns. These are important qualities in a leader.” Goyke also highlighted Aisha’s commitment to connecting with the community. “She has also shown up in my neighborhood, at my door, and those of my neighbors, which shows her willingness to meet voters and hear our concerns directly. I am endorsing her this time because I believe she will represent our community well on the School Board and I support
