The Monroe County Airports Director, the director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and a representative of Category5 Signs took part recently in the installation of a large poster Thursday reminding passengers arriving at the Florida Keysâ Key West International Airport to wear masks to protect themselves and others from possible COVID-19 spread.
The Tourist Development Council funded the production and installation of several signs that augment other messages the tourism council has created at the airport.
The Tourist Development Council has sponsored several sign projects throughout the Keys promoting the use of masks during the pandemic.
When you are outside do you ever take the time to pause and look up into the sky?
If you have, and it is clear to at least partly cloudy, you have likely at some time or another seen white streaks which are trailing a hardly discernible spec. Of course, the spec is a high flying jet and the white streaks are its contrails.
A little internet searching reveals that a plane creates contrails when water vapor quickly condenses around soot from the plane s exhaust and freezes.
If you are a frequent sky watcher, you have probably noticed that contrails do not always accompany jets. Sometimes they stretch from horizon to horizon and last for hours while at other times they will trail the jet for a short distance before dissipating after only a few minutes.

An airplane hangar would have been both appropriate and necessary to house the library of newspaper clippings Louise McPhelridge Thaden accumulated for her lifetime aloft.
A statue prominently displayed at an international airport would have worked nicely as well. A suitable model for the sculptor would have been the vintage photograph of Thaden posing with her left hand clutching a biplane wing strut, riding-booted right foot resting comfortably on the hub of the landing wheel assembly as she looked confidently toward the camera.
The press loved Thaden, she of the first generation of daring American women pilots. From east to west and north to south the headlines heralded her flying feats of speed, height, and endurance.
Visions of hot air balloons will be glowing in the eyes of children and adults alike as the Paris Balloon and Music Festival makes a comeback following last yearâs cancellation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The event, set to take place Sept. 10 and 11, brings hot air balloon pilots to Northeast Texas from as far away as California for a weekend of festivities and wonder as the balloons soar high into the air.
Organizer Lena Spencer said the event will be all the more meaningful this year after the community had to miss out on it in 2020. Spencer, who chairs the Childrenâs Department, wrangles volunteers, and takes care of publicity, graphic design and creative work to get the word out about the festival, said the decision to cancel last year was a tough one for the board.
