“It’s got lots of power if you need it,” he said. “It’s just very neat to be a part of something that’s probably going to end up being a big part of our industry to come, that’s for sure.” Kowalko said students have been “over the moon” about riding in an electric bus. They received cards on Monday that said: “I rode on the first electric school bus in B.C.” The new bus can seat 76 kindergarten-Grade 4 students and 48 older students, slightly less than a diesel model. A second electric bus is scheduled to be in service by mid-month in the district, where the bus system serves more than 4,000 students.

In a statement, Premier John Horgan said by shifting gears from diesel to electric school buses, Kindergarten to Grade 12 students are benefiting from healthier and more sustainable learning environments. Electric school buses produce zero emissions and also support Clean B.C.’s target to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2030, Horgan added.
VICTORIA The Sooke School District (SD62) is the first jurisdiction in B.C. to introduce electric school buses to its fleet. The province says that the fully electric buses are better for the environment and are smoother and quieter than current diesel buses. Each electric bus is expected to remove about 17 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually compared to diesel buses, and cost less to maintain over time, according to the province. SD62 s first electric bus entered service this week, with another expected to arrive in roughly two weeks. By shifting gears from diesel to electric school buses, these K-12 students are benefiting from our government’s work to create healthier and more sustainable learning environments across B.C., said Premier John Horgan, MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca, in a statement Thursday.

VANCOUVER The latest map of COVID-19 cases in B.C. is covered in splotches of dark red, indicating large numbers of per-capita infections in many regions of the province. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control published the map Thursday of confirmed coronavirus cases during the week of Jan. 17 to 23. The map shows both the total number of cases detected in each of the province s local health areas during the specified week, as well as the number of cases recorded per 100,000 residents each day during the period. The darkest shade of red on the map indicates regions that saw more than 20 new cases per 100,000 residents during that week.
