Sanjay Mishra, PhD

Sanjay is the project coordinator for the COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium , (CCC19) consisting of over 125 cancer centers and other organizations that have come together to collect data about cancer patients who have been infected with COVID-19. Previously, Sanjay worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, where he tried to develop vaccine candidates against Zika and Dengue. He got his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Chemical and Physical Biology, studying small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) for their role in the stress response and aging. Using protein engineering and CRISPR knockout strategies, Sanjay showed that sHSPs have conserved roles among vertebrates, and sHSPs have evolved possibly under the organellar and organismic proteostatic demands. When not in lab, Sanjay moonlights as a popular science writer.

Researchers isolate human monoclonal antibodies that may neutralize several norovirus variants

Researchers isolate human monoclonal antibodies that may neutralize several norovirus variants Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, have taken a big step toward developing targeted treatments and vaccines against a family of viruses that attacks the gastrointestinal tract. Each year in the United States circulating strains of the human norovirus are responsible for approximately 20 million cases of acute gastroenteritis. Hallmark symptoms include severe abdominal cramping, diarrhea and vomiting. Several vaccine candidates are in clinical trials, but it is unclear how effective they will be, given the periodic emergence of novel norovirus variants. Developing broadly effective vaccines will require an understanding of the genetic diversity of the virus and the mechanisms by which the immune system can neutralize it.
