Deconstruct UK has been appointed to take over from Wates as the principal contractor managing the Grenfell Tower site.
Deconstruct, which has been working on site as a specialist subcontractor since 2017, will replace Wates Property, after its contract expires in July. Wates was drafted in to take care of the site following the tragic fire in June 2017 which killed 72 people.
Deconstruct will be responsible for 24-hour monitoring of the tower, removing heavy and damaged items as well as asbestos, installing weight-bearing props and general maintenance of the tower.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has made clear that the company, best known for its demolition work, has not been appointed to take down the tower. Earlier this month, the government announced plans to consult former residents on the potential for deconstructing the tower after receiving advice from Atkins and Jacobs about the tower’s condition.
