Chamber happenings: Summer youth work program worth checking out

By LYNN WARD 22 The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development has just launched a new initiative, CTforMe.com, to showcase to young professionals why our state is a worthwhile place to live, work and play. The state recognizes that a highly skilled, media-savvy workforce – millennials – is key to the economic recovery of Connecticut. What’s another way to play an active role in this recovery? If you are a business owner, I encourage you to join in on this initiative by taking part in a summer youth employment program that will help build this necessary workforce to keep our economy thriving. Through a partnership with the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, the Waterbury Regional Chamber is encouraging area employers to register as a summer worksite as part of the NRWIB’s summer youth program. This program allows low-income youth and young adults between the ages of 14 and 21 to be assigned to a business or organization for a six-week period b

Mayor presents $9.3M budget to council

By Elio Gugliotti, Editor PROSPECT — Mayor Robert Chatfield has proposed a municipal budget for 2021-22 that would increase town spending by 2.7%. Chatfield presented his recommended $9.3 million town budget, which is an increase of $246,806 over current town spending, to the Town Council during a special meeting March 10. Officials pointed to contractual costs, including 2.75% raises for employees, for driving much of the increase. Council Chairman Jeffrey Slapikas said salary increases alone amount to $72,628. Benefits and insurance are also a hefty expense. Combined, the cost of benefits and insurance is expected to increase $38,742 to $1.14 million. Slapikas said Chatfield has done a good job with the budget so far. He called the proposal “a good steppingstone for the council to start our work on.”
