One temblor, occurring at 6:52 a.m., registered the highest magnitude of 5.2 among the 18 quakes, rocking Jian township of the county, a subduction zone comprising the Eurasian plate and the Philippine Sea plate, the CWB said. The quake was centered 5.1 kilometers southwest of Hualien County Hall and occurred at a depth of 5.9 km, the CWB s Seismology Center said. The CWB said the earthquake s intensity, which gauges its actual effect, was highest in Hualien City, where it measured 5- on Taiwan s 7-tier intensity scale, the CWB said.
