Kick off a conversation about bygone restaurants in Mobile and you’ll hear about some COVID casualties. But it’s likely to go far deeper than that.
A longer look back finds some legendary places with stories that grew with Mobile after (or even through) its World War II boom. Some are intertwined with the decline and slow rise of Downtown. There is, as one would expect, a heck of a lot of seafood on the menu. There’s also a conspicuous Greek influence.

2020 was a rough year for restaurants and that’s putting it mildly.
The year started out with the usual ebbs and flows of a competitive dining industry. In Birmingham, for example, Pihakis Restaurant Group was preparing to eventually shutter its location of Mile-End Deli in the city’s downtown area and transition the building to another one of its concepts: a Hero Doughnuts & Buns.
