February 23rd, 2021 share-square-411279 The New Orleans MLB Youth Academy, which is operated by Major League Baseball, and Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA), a Historically Black College & University (HBCU) in New Orleans, have partnered to help launch the university’s 2021 baseball and softball seasons in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). This season marks the first-time baseball will be offered at Xavier since 1960, and the first-ever softball program in school history. As part of the agreement, both programs will receive full access for games and practices to the facilities at the New Orleans MLB Youth Academy, including Wesley Barrow Stadium, the artificial turf softball field, indoor/outdoor bullpens and batting cages, and the 200-square-foot climate-controlled press box. USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT) has been training at the Texas Rangers MLB Youth Academy at Mercy Street Sports Complex, presented by Toyota this past week as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Despite busy practice schedules, Cat Osterman and Ally Carda spent National Girls and Women in Sports Day with Academy softball athletes. Junior Kaila Torres (2022) from Sunset High School was “so excited and shocked at the same time” by the unexpected visit. “Cat gave good advice on pitching…accuracy before speed,” said Torres, speaking on their conversation. Osterman and Carda advised them to never give up on their dreams of playing softball and to remember the importance of practicing to improve. ....

Manfred, Jr. announced today that Major League Baseball has named longtime baseball operations executive Michael Hill and former All-Star Raul Ibañez as Senior Vice Presidents of On-Field Operations. Hill and Ibañez, who will report to Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Morgan Sword, will serve in key roles overseeing umpiring, discipline and other on-field issues. In addition, MLB has hired former Major League manager Bo Porter and former Major League players Joe Martinez and Rajai Davis to roles in its Baseball Operations Department.
