More than 25 years ago, Jill Sobule helped boost the visibility of LGBTQ stories in mainstream pop music with her playful and endearing 1995 folk-rock single I Kissed a Girl.
This weekend, the singer/songwriter will be in New Jersey to lend her voice in support of an organization that works to serve members of the state s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community and their allies, the Princeton-based Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice.
“I consider myself an activist, and part of what I do, I believe, is these sorts of things, Sobule said. I always say I’ve become the nonprofit singer, and that’s important to me that’s just part of my DNA. That’s what I do and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s more important to me to feel like you’re leaving a gig feeling like you did some good other than playing a bar.”
