Ojai Valley News - News - Results from #90

By Karen S. Wilson, Ph.D. Re: Nicholas Oatway’s Feb. 19 Op-Ed, “Open hearts to make Chaparral property ‘alive’”: I found Mr. Oatway s Op-Ed calling for open hearts to make Chaparral property alive to be inspiring and visionary. The Ojai Unified School District trustees should give serious consideration to Mr. Oatway s proposal, as I stated in an email to Shelley Griffen, trustee of my district.  I encourage other residents interested in the redevelopment of the Chaparral property to make similar requests. Local architect Oatway s vision seems much more compatible with the “Ojai way” than the site plan proposed by an outside firm.

Ojai Valley News - News - Results from #75

Photo by Fern Barishman A ubiquitous pink peace sign in Ojai, created by Fern Barishman s neighbor Lou Mora, was given to her by friend Brian Berman. It replaces the peace sign in front of Barishman s home on Ojai s Ventura Street that was defaced with a spraypainted backward swastika, obscenity and racial epithet sometime overnight between Feb. 19 and Feb. 20.   Ojai Valley News editor Who ever spraypainted a backward swastika, racial epithet and obscenity on a pink peace sign on Ojai’s Ventura Street during the night from Feb. 19 to the morning of Feb. 20 probably had no idea that act of hate would prompt such an outpouring of love.

Photo by Mary Looby On Horn Peak above The Thacher School, members of the Upper Ojai Search and Rescue team found a notebook left there by two hikers seeking the peak in 2013.   Notebook found about epic trek to Horn Peak A trail register left atop 3,332-foot Horn Peak more than seven years ago was found Feb. 6 by two Upper Ojai Search and Rescue team members who regularly hike in the area to stay in shape, improve area familiarization and stay aware of current trail conditions. A canister containing the register was placed on the peak on Oct. 27, 2013, by Ojai Valley News senior reporter Perry Van Houten and hiking companion Bardley Smith. With the old trail long-abandoned, the pair used GPS data and satellite images to find the peak. Van Houten’s “Ojai Valley Hiking Trails” column, reprinted here from Nov. 20, 2013, describes the adventure.
