Firms that engage in tax avoidance, which are activities that, while legal, go against the “spirit” of the law, make the government’s job more difficult. This harms corporations’ own stakeholders, who rely on tax money, and it must stop. Ironically, some of these tax avoiders are firms that are represented by the Business Roundtable, which, in a 2019 statement on the purpose, committed to delivering value to each of its stakeholders: customers, suppliers, workers, communities, and shareholders. All these stakeholders rely on the government, in good and in bad times, something that has become abundantly clear during the pandemic. Commitments to “invest in our employees,” for instance, while paying no federal taxes at all, ring hollow – especially when the government is sending stimulus checks to these same employees.
