Report reveals the pupils most impacted by Covid-19 across the borough A NATIONAL report produced in conjunction with Cheshire West and Chester Council and the borough’s schools has provided vital insights into the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on pupils’ attendance. The findings of the report, entitled It’s Time to ACT, show that pupils eligible for free school meals, pupils who have previous or current contact with children’s service and pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) were the most impacted, alongside pupils from areas of high deprivation and who had previous fixed-term exclusions. The was published this week by Social Finance, will be used to shape support and services for the borough’s children and young people as the nation continues to emerge from lockdown.
WEST Cheshire Foodbank has seen a 60 per cent increase in demand year on year over the last quarter, the charity has revealed. Affiliated to the Trussell Trust, but a charity in its own right with distribution centres across Neston, Ellesmere Port, Chester, and surrounding rural areas, the registered charity is funded by donations. The foodbank successfully applied to Redrow’s King’s Moat Garden Village Community Fund for the Chester area and received £1,000 towards providing food parcels and activity packs for families during school holidays. West Cheshire Foodbank finance trustee Ian Oulton said: “The foodbank has a strong record of working with the community to support local people and provide access to emergency food for those in crisis.
A CHESHIRE charity has joined forces with an online electricals retailer in a mission to tackle food poverty in the county. The food waste slow cooker campaign has been launched by Cheshire Food Hub, with support from online electricals retailer, AO.com. Cheshire Food Hub, in partnership with The Welcome Network and the Recipe Exchange, has recently launched the Love Slow Cookers, Hate Food Waste campaign. The project will support families across Cheshire who are struggling to make ends meet, teaching them how to use a slow cooker to make cheap and nutritious meals. AO.com has stepped in to support by donating 200 Swan slow cookers which will be loaned to the families along with fortnightly recipes and ingredients packs. Families will be able to access low-cost surplus foods from their local food group to try recipe alternatives, helping to reduce food waste and save money.
