The Historic Todd County group unveiled a 50-year-old time capsule to the public Saturday evening.
A county native, who was an integral part of its burial, came full circle as he watched the capsule unpacking in the Todd County Fiscal Court meeting room.
James Groves was appointed by then Judge-Executive Charlie Power to head up the committee to plan the phases for the project. Groves told the News Edge the time capsule followed the sesquicentennial of the county.

A time capsule buried on the grounds of the Historic Todd County Courthouse on the Public Square was unearthed and opened Saturday and plans are being made to preserve some of 2021 and bury it for future generations.
Glen Slack is the president of Historic Todd County, Inc. and read a letter from the committee that buried the capsule for the county’s 150th anniversary half a century ago.
On hand for the capsule opening was James Groves, who led the committee that buried the capsule in 1971. He wore a necktie Saturday that he and other members wore then and one of the ties was among the items removed and inventoried during a ceremony that was streamed on Facebook Live.

A time capsule buried for Todd County’s 150th anniversary on May 1, 1971 will be unearthed from the Public Square and then opened Saturday night on Facebook Live.
It’s being facilitated by Historic Todd County, Inc. and they say the opening of the capsule will be streamed Saturday night at 7 on the Todd County Fiscal Court Facebook page.
A crowd will not be allowed in the courthouse where the opening is happening due to COVID protocols.
The plans are for the contents to be placed at the Welcome Center inside the Historic Courthouse for public viewing from May 8 until July 3.
