Hidden Heroines: the untold stories of the women of the Chatham dockyard exhibition to open soon

A young woman who became the first apprentice at Chatham Dockyard in the 1970s is one of the women featured in a new exhibition due to go on show soon.
Hidden Heroines, which is due to go on show at the Historic Dockyard Chatham later this spring, looks at the female workers at the dockyard over 200 years, from the first women of the Spinning Rooms and Sail and Colour Loft to tales of stowaways and women masquerading as men.

The University of Kent has launched a competition for architects to design a new £5.5 million Institute of Cultural and Creative Industries in Chatham [Deadline: 3 March 2021]
The winning team selected for the estimated £200,000 contract will create a new ‘eco-friendly, iconic and unique flexible “laboratory” accelerator space’ bringing together students and businesses in the creative, cultural and digital sectors in the historic Medway town.

The ‘Docking Station’ project, planned to complete in 2024, will transform the Grade II-listed Police Section House – overlooking The Historic Dockyard Chatham – into a new ‘simple, sustainable, accessible and flexible’ BREEAM excellent hub for the university which is headquartered in nearby Canterbury.
