Commissioners conducting hearing for exciting $75m Ōmokoroa town centre

An application for a $75 million commercial and residential hub in Ōmokoroa is in the hands of three independent commissioners hearing evidence this week. Jace Investments Ltd is seeking resource consent for an Ōmokoroa Town centre.
It is for the establishment of a mixed-use retail and commercial precinct with medium density residential units, and visitor accommodation at 404 Omokoroa Rd.
The land includes about 5.3ha of commercial-zoned land and is the last undeveloped site in the main Ōmokoroa commercial zone.
Another 2.5ha has been zoned for future urban land.

A resident who is opposed to an application to establish an Ōmokoroa Town Centre in her neighbourhood says she would sell up if she could. Resource consent is being sought by Jace Investment Limited for a $75 million commercial and residential hub at 404 Ōmokoroa Rd.

Iwi have made it clear they will not be participating in the desecration of their sacred, ancestral lands.
At the final day of the hearing into the granting of a resource consent for a residential subdivision next to an ancient urupa in Whakatāne, tangata whenua were adamant they would not take part in any accidental discovery protocol if koiwi (bones) were found during development – to do so would sever their whakapapa to the land and make a mockery of their role as kaitiaki, they said.

Tanagata whenua are trying to stop Whakatāne District Council from granting consent for 240 residential sections and a 250-unit retirement village on land they consider to be wahi tapu and adjacent to the ancient coastal urupa Opihi Whanaungakore, which is still in use today.
