That was the topic of conversation when the committee met last Wednesday to discuss the idea of a police department assessment from Holyoke Community College criminal justice professor Nicole Hendricks, Police Chief Manny Febo and residents who had served on former mayor Alex Morse’s stalled Civilian Review Committee. The incident that sparked Wednesday’s conversation, though not mentioned directly, was a viral video that HPD patrolman Rafael Roca posted on social media last month in which he levied allegations of corruption, misbehavior and discrimination within the department. My 2-year-old is asleep, the coffee is hot, the contact lenses are out and the glasses are on. Let’s do this. ....
Bakersfield has become the hot destination for young Angelenos who want the COVID-19 vaccine but don’t yet qualify for the shots at home. The vaccine seekers have included writers, engineers and Hollywood actors, who say the vaccination site at Cal State Bakersfield was welcoming Angelenos with open arms, writes my colleague Laura J. Nelson. Advertisement Southern Californians began making four-hour round-trip excursions to the Central Valley after word spread that the site had more doses than patients and was accepting anyone 16 and older. By Monday night, “Bakersfield” was trending on Twitter. “The whole way there, and the whole way back, my friend and I were kind of in a daze,” said Julie Greiner, 25, a comedy writer from Glendale who got ice cream to celebrate her vaccination. “We were like, did this really happen?” ....
