Eleven Arizona mayors led by Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego have released a joint letter to the state’s congressional delegation supporting Amtrak’s vision to bring passenger rail service to the Tucson-Phoenix corridor.
There hasn’t been rail service between Tucson and Phoenix since the mid 1990s. Amtrak’s proposal calls for three daily round-trips from Tucson through to Phoenix and Buckeye (see map above), running on host freight railroad Union Pacific. In addition to the existing Tucson station, there would be eight new stations on the route: Marana, Coolidge, Queen Creek, Tempe, Phoenix Sky Harbor
Small businesses thankful for Valley Metro grant program

Four months after the city of Phoenix and Valley Metro launched the Small Business Financial Assistance Program (SBFAP), local business owners in downtown Phoenix say they appreciate the boost.
The one-year pilot program provides direct financial assistance to locally-owned and eligible small businesses next to the Northwest Extension Phase II and South Central Extension/Downtown Hub projects.
Hilda Pena, owner of Botas Juarez, a boot barn in south Phoenix, has been approved for a $9,000 grant. She said she’s thankful to the City of Phoenix and Valley Metro for organizing the grant. Pena mentioned that Valley Metro and the City of Phoenix also provided different tools that would help her, such as a map of the light rail that runs by her storefront.

Maricopa Animal Safe Haven Launches in Phoenix; Announces Campaign to Raise $8.5 Million for New Phoenix Facility
(PHOENIX – April 2, 2021) – The Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office (MSCO) Animal Safe Haven Unit, which is currently located at the former 1st Avenue Jail at 102 W. Madison Street in downtown Phoenix, was first formed in 2001. The old jail was meant to serve as a temporary facility offering care, training and health services for animals seized during lawful actions by MCSO.

Federal Transit Administration
The Trump Administration announced Dec. 17 a total of $544.3 million in federal funding will be allocated by the
U.S. Department of Transportation s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to seven transit infrastructure projects in Arizona, California, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina and Utah. Funding is provided through FTA s Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Program. This $544.3 million federal investment will help ensure that critical improvements can be made to our country s public transportation systems, said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.
With this announcement, FTA has advanced funding for 41 new CIG projects throughout the nation under this Administration, totaling approximately $10.7 billion in funding commitments.
