North Duplin grad named N.C. Exchange Club Youth of the Year

Thornton received a $1,000 scholarship. She was sponsored by the Exchange Club of Mount Olive. Thornton has been involved in many fundraisers and service projects in her local and surrounding communities, said Lynne Smith, school counselor at North Duplin High. Thornton has helped coordinate the Books for Buddies program at North Duplin Elementary, has helped with the John Roland Sullivan Scholarship Benefit for several years and actively volunteered at Sampson Regional Center in Clinton. She also founded “The Rose Project: Notes of Love,” in which she made paper roses from tissue paper and wrote notes to go along with them to nursing home residents during the pandemic. Within eight months, she had made and delivered more than 1,000 roses and notes to 14 different nursing homes, logging more than 600 miles across eastern North Carolina.

Confident, relaxed Rebels shut out Firebirds

By RUDY COGGINS Assistant Editor CALYPSO - Kasey Jones has heard the story about North Duplin’s 2015 championship season and how this team could be on that same path. Jones doesn’t like turning back the clock. She respects the history, but understands the present. “There’s a lot of pressure. We have to keep it cool, keep a level head and know if we come out here to compete, I think we can beat anybody.” The Rebels proved that Monday evening. Jones and freshman Reece Outlaw each slugged a home as North Duplin thumped Falls Lake Academy, 10-0, in their opening-round N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1A softball playoff game.

2021 NCHSAA 1A Softball Playoff Projections

2021 NCHSAA 1A Softball Playoff Projections Tags: By Nick Stevens, HighSchoolOT managing editor Below are the projections for the 1A softball state playoffs for the 2020-2021 season. These projections are not official and can change when the official brackets are released by the N.C. High School Athletic Association on Saturday, May 1. However, these projections are made using the protocols adopted by the NCHSAA Board of Directors and the results entered into MaxPreps by the schools. You can read the in-depth breakdown on how the playoff qualifiers will be determined and brackets created by clicking here. Important note: We will not be able to project an actual bracket for the playoffs this year, only the qualifiers, the wildcard spots, the seeding tiers, and the bubble. Since the bracket will be built based on a random draw, it is impossible for us to project the eventual bracket with any level of certainty.
