An opening of the 37th Legislative District Senate seat 16 years ago set off an intra-Democratic Party battle that tested the power of the Bergen County Democratic Party boss Joe Ferriero and a band of grassroots activists who challenged him.
The leader of that battle, Sen. Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck, ultimately prevailed by a paper-thin margin after a nasty court battle. Weinberg announced her retirement Wednesday, and now a different competition may emerge this time between two crucial Democratic Party constituencies.
