7,000 Northern Ireland treatments paid for under Cross Border Directive in 2020

7,000 Northern Ireland treatments paid for under Cross Border Directive in 2020 Cross border cardiology and cancer treatments to continue on all-Island basis Treatment accessed in Northern Ireland in 2020 for around 7,000 patients from Ireland have been reimbursed in the final year of the Cross Border Directive. As a direct consequence of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, the Cross Border Directive no longer applies to the UK since January 1, 2021. In 2020, almost 7,850 cases of Cross Border Directive (CBD) reimbursements allowed under EU law were paid for treatments accessed by Irish patients in the UK. Routine reimbursed healthcare treatment accessed by Irish patients in the UK represented 90 per cent of all treatments accessed by Irish residents under the directive last year.

Reimbursing patients in the Republic for private healthcare in the North looks set to be further extended Published: Tuesday, 09 March 2021 12:34 A temporary scheme to replace the former Cross-Border Directive was described as a ‘sticky plaster’ at the Oireathas Brexit Committee yesterday, by Mayo Senator Lisa Chambers. The scheme provides reimbursement of private healthcare for patients travelling to the north to undergo outpatient surgeries, due to long waiting list across the region. Senator Chambers says that there are plans to extend the 12-month continuation of the directive, in the form of the new Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme, and put it on a statutory footing.

New scheme opens temporary access to healthcare in Northern Ireland

New scheme opens temporary access to healthcare in Northern Ireland Transitional arrangements in place for patients due to receive treatment in the UK A new Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme, operational for 2021, has replaced the former Cross Border Directive in providing reimbursement of private healthcare for patients from the Republic for a 12 month period. The Government approved the introduction of the new scheme at the end of December to run on an ‘administrative basis’ for 12 months. The new scheme is to enable anyone living in the Republic to access and be reimbursed for private healthcare in Northern Ireland by the Health Service Executive (HSE), provided such healthcare is publicly available within Ireland.
