REPLACING A US SENATOR FROM OKLAHOMA: Oklahoma lawmakers working to solidify protocol used to replace US senator s vacant seat

State lawmakers on Tuesday worked on a fix in case a U.S. Senate seat from Oklahoma becomes open long before the next election. It s so critical right now with the U.S. Senate split 50-50. Any change in U.S. senators could upend how much power each party has in that body. Most states have a process in place to appoint someone if a U.S. Senate seat is vacated for any reason. Lonnie Paxton said that if an open seat were to happen right now with a 50-50 Senate, the power-sharing agreement would fall apart, and Democrats would outright control the chamber instead of just having the tie-breaking vote. Oklahoma House, Senate unveil proposed legislative redistricting maps

CNHI File Photo OKLAHOMA — The state’s urban areas will pick up additional seats in the Legislature under new House and Senate redistricting maps unveiled Wednesday. Oklahoma lawmakers said they likely won’t attempt to redraw the state’s congressional maps until fall — after the U.S. Census Bureau is expected to release final numbers from last year’s population count that’s required every decade. The state Constitution requires the Legislature to adopt new legislative districts by the end of session, so lawmakers said Wednesday that they relied on the best data available — the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey from 2015-2019 — to set the new House and Senate district boundaries for the state’s growing population that’s estimated to top 3.9 million people.
