Looking to prevent widespread COVID-19 outbreaks behind bars, corrections officials in several states moved quickly in 2020 to release medically vulnerable and nonviolent prisoners.
Wisconsin freed 1,600 people from its prisons from March 2 through May 4, 2020, most of them serving time for parole and probation violations. The Iowa Department of Corrections approved the release of 700 prisoners on March 23 of last year.
State lawmakers on Tuesday worked on a fix in case a U.S. Senate seat from Oklahoma becomes open long before the next election. It s so critical right now with the U.S. Senate split 50-50. Any change in U.S. senators could upend how much power each party has in that body. Most states have a process in place to appoint someone if a U.S. Senate seat is vacated for any reason. For instance, that s what happened in California when Vice President Kamala Harris left her Senate seat to assume that office.Oklahoma doesn t have something like that, which could leave the seat open for months until an election.State Sen. Lonnie Paxton said that if an open seat were to happen right now with a 50-50 Senate, the power-sharing agreement would fall apart, and Democrats would outright control the chamber instead of just having the tie-breaking vote. He said regardless, the governor appointing someone for the short-term is a good temporary solution so an election isn t rushed. This bill, I ran it

OKLAHOMA â The stateâs urban areas will pick up additional seats in the Legislature under new House and Senate redistricting maps unveiled Wednesday.
Oklahoma lawmakers said they likely wonât attempt to redraw the stateâs congressional maps until fall â after the U.S. Census Bureau is expected to release final numbers from last yearâs population count thatâs required every decade.
The state Constitution requires the Legislature to adopt new legislative districts by the end of session, so lawmakers said Wednesday that they relied on the best data available â the Census Bureauâs American Community Survey from 2015-2019 â to set the new House and Senate district boundaries for the stateâs growing population thatâs estimated to top 3.9 million people.
