Georgia Southern Theatre production about 1998 hate crime to stream April 8
April 8, 2021
The Masquers on the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus will stream a production of “The Laramie Project” from April 8 through 11.
Logan Western
The play addresses the tragic 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay man and student who was abducted, brutally beaten and left tied to a fence to die in the countryside of Laramie, Wyoming.
“This play was difficult to handle in some scenes,” said theater major Logan Western, who has eight roles in the show. “When a character spouts some homophobic nonsense, my guts kind of twist in anger. I cringe at what they say, especially knowing that these are the real words of real people. In order to handle these feelings, I would think about how far we’ve come since the incidents of the play.”
From April 8 through April 11 the play “The Laramie Project” will be available through the Georgia Southern Theater Live Stream and is not for the faint of heart.
This play re-tells the horrific events that happened in October of 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming where Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming, suffered at the hands of others for being part of the LGBTQ+ community.
This play is constructed through the interviews of 200 individuals who were connected to the case or citizens of Laramie and described as a “[…] breathtaking collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.”
2021/02/09 03:18 COLUMBIANA, Ala. (AP) A former campus police officer convicted of manslaughter in the death of his wife, an adult model who posted racy photos online, was sentenced to 16 years in prison Monday by a judge who said the man still hadn t taken responsibility for the death. William Jeffrey West, 47, will get credit for the three years he has spent in jail since his arrest in the death of Kathleen Dawn West, 42, news outlets reported. He faced a maximum 20 years in prison. Kat West was found dead in January 2018 along the street in front of the couple’s suburban home in Calera, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Birmingham. Jeff West killed her with a blow to the head from a liquor bottle, prosecutors contended, but the defense argued she died in an accidental fall after a night of heavy drinking.

An Alabama man was sentenced to 16 years behind bars after being convicted of manslaughter in the 2018 death of his cam girl wife, whose partially clothed body was found outside the couple’s home.
Jeff West struck his wife, Kathleen Dawn West, in the head with a liquor bottle then left her body in the street, according to a statement from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office announcing his sentence Monday.
“We’re pleased with the jury’s verdict and opportunity to bring justice for Ms. West and the citizens of Shelby County,” Assistant District Attorney Daniel McBrayer said.
