Pickens County: CommUNITY Conversation: Mable Owens Clarke of Soapstone Church

Updated: 7:08 PM EST Mar 5, 2021 Jane Robelot Soapstone Church on Liberia Road in Pickens County has a long and rich history, and thanks to its matriarch, Mable Owens Clarke, its future is brilliant, as well.Clarke is a descendant of a freed slave and one of the men who founded the church in the late 1800s. He and other former slaves now rest in the historic cemetery. Recently, Clarke welcomed two groups of young men from Clemson University to the church. They brought their shovels, and their muscles to free those graves of debris from last year’s storms. Two fraternities, Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Tau Omega, didn’t see one another often on campus – but on the grounds of Soapstone they formed a bond. They’ve gone back to Soapstone and it’s becoming a touchstone for forming new friendships. That is the joy of Clarke s heart, she says. Stage set for Presidential inauguration

Graphic Online BY: Emmanuel Bonney 30.5k Shares 705 The stage is set for the swearing-in today of the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the Vice-President-elect, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on the precincts of Parliament House. The duo are entering their second term in office, after President Akufo-Addo’s victory in the December 7, 2020, presidential election. Officially, the first term of President Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Bawumia came to an end last midnight, the same period that the seventh Parliament was dissolved to pave the way for the inauguration of the eighth Parliament in the early hours of today. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to commence at 11 a.m., and invited guests, apart from the Heads of State, are expected to be seated by 9.45 a.m.

Roads to Parliament to close January 7— Police

Graphic Online BY: Emmanuel Bonney 705 Some roads leading to and from Parliament House will be closed to the public on Thursday, January 7, 2020 during the swearing-in of the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Vice President-elect, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. The move forms part of security measures put in place by the Ghana Police Service to ensure a smooth conduct of activities during the inauguration. The roads to be closed are the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on the Lokko Street, the Castle Road from AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, the Crossroad heading towards Starlet 95 Street, the Independence Arch near the Ohene Djan   Stadium, the Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue (Ghana Institute of Journalism) Road on the Haile Selassie Street and the Opeibea, 37 Military Interchange and Ako Adjei on the Liberation Road.
