During a rally to remember those killed by police, leaders with the Lehigh Valley Stands Up pushed attendees to focus on local politics to help bring changes to what they say is a flawed system.
On its second attempt, Allentown City Council adopted a resolution Wednesday recommending the county administration, district attorney’s office and courts system limit future incarcerations and to release as many non-violent offenders as possible to house arrest. The resolution also suggests the county should ensure jail staff, inmates and visitors have clean personal protective equipment.
The Lehigh Valley Quakers have taken an interest in jail inmates who they believe are stuck behind bars simply because they cannot afford bail. But, as the Quakers have discovered, the cash bail hurdle isn’t always about cash.
