Bayou Bridge Pipeline Construction Mess Poses Major Risk to Atchafalaya Basin

“It is a crime against nature,” Jody Meche, president of the Louisiana Crawfish Producers Association-West, said while scanning the Bayou Bridge pipeline right-of-way on the west side of the Atchafalaya Basin, the country’s largest river swamp in a designated National Heritage Area.
His voice trembled with rage as he told me that he was speaking for all the animals living in the basin that can’t speak for themselves.
“The Bayou Bridge pipeline has left a dam across the Atchafalaya Basin affecting the fisheries, the birds, the otters, minks, raccoons, and nutria,” Meche said.
On September 27, I joined Meche and Dean Wilson, executive director of the conservation group Atchafalaya Basinkeeper, on a monitoring trip to the west side of the pipeline. It was their first trip along the pipeline’s construction path, which only recently became visible after unusually high water levels in the basin receded. ....

Terrebonne wetlands river diversion among task force concerns

A new task force will address key issues that will need to be resolved before the state moves forward with a major river diversion to restore thousands of acres of eroding wetlands in Terrebonne Parish.
The Atchafalaya River Basin Restoration and Enhancement Task Force will include representatives of landowners, fishermen, the oil and gas industry, communities and others interests in the region.
Gov. John Bel Edwards said the goal is to address long-standing and sometimes-conflicting issues in the basin and raise public awareness of the critical nature of these concerns.
“The irony of the Atchafalaya Basin is that while it is suffering from an abundance of sediment, the rest of our coast is experiencing a severe sediment deficit,” Edwards said in a news release. ....

Several Louisiana organizations have joined together to form The Atchafalaya Basin Coalition, and are asking the governor for representation on the newly-formed task force.
The Coalition consists of fishermen and environmental groups with the common purpose of protecting Louisianaâs Atchafalaya Basin swamps, lakes, and waterways for generations to come, a release states.
Louisiana Crawfish Producers Association West, Atchafalaya Basinkeeper, Sierra Club, and Healthy Gulf all have serious concerns that there are issues in the Atchafalaya Basin that are not currently being adequately addressed and managed, the release states. ....

New Atchafalaya Basin Coalition Wants In On Edwards' Task Force, And Wants Nature Conservancy Out

A coalition of conservation groups on Friday announced the formation of the Atchafalaya Basin Coalition and sent a letter to Gov. John Bel Edwards imploring him to consider the Louisiana Nature Conservancy as a landowner, rather than a conservation group, when choosing members of a newly-formed task force.
Led by members of the Atchafalaya Basinkeeper, an environmental advocacy group that has worked in the basin for 16 years and opposes some of the state’s restoration efforts there, the coalition argues that the Nature Conservancy is biased toward defending landowners, in part because it owns land in the basin itself. ....
